The Mermaid That Was

October 2, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

This mermaid statue first appeared in Boltenhagen on the north coast of Germany in early 2005, with no one apparently knowing where it came from or who made it.

Travemünde Mermaid

After making quite a splash and spawning a small cottage industry of mermaid mementos and figurines, the mermaid statue disappeared without a trace in late February 2006.

A replica showed up however, in April of 2007, in Travemünde, about 15 miles from where the Boltenhagen mermaid sculpture sat.   ( map )  This replica was so exact that the owner of this new mermaid statue was taken to court for the theft of the original mermaid – whose ownership was never known – and had to prove her innocence by proving that the new statue had been cast after the original disappeared.

A severe storm in June 2007 damaged the Travemünde mermaid, but it was repaired and reseated in a “safer” location.   This lasted until June 16th, 2008, when the mermaid was destroyed by a drunk driver colliding with the mermaid while driving on the beach with his SUV at night.

Thus ended the saga of the mermaid in Boltenhagen and Travemünde.

Pania of the Reef

According to one of several versions of an old Maori legend, the mermaid Pania lived in the sea off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island.  One day she fell in love with and secretly married Karitoki, the son of a Maori chief, living with him at night and living in the sea with the mermaid people during the day.

The Haenyeo Mermaid by Dragon’s Head Rock

August 28, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

The South Korean island of Jeju is famous for its mermaid divers (Haenyeo) – women who dive for abalone, seaweed, sea urchins, octopi, shellfish and other treasures, in a tradition dating back centuries.   As a symbol of the island’s haenyeo, on the north shore of Jeju, near the famous Dragon’s Head Rock, sits a smiling mermaid statue.

Both the mermaid and the Dragon’s Head Rock are popular tourist destinations. The dragon in question is a Black Dragon, which in Asian mythology is a rare thing – appearing only once every 60 years. Black Dragons bring luck – so the fact that there is a black dragon’s head here makes it a lucky location.
