August 7, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

Putri Duyung means “mermaid” in Indonesian. Putri Duyung Ancol literally means “Mermaid of Ancol Bay” and is an exotic beach resort hotel on the north coast of Jakarta in Ancol Bay. The hotel is part of Ancol Dreamland, an amusement park complex which includes Fantasy World, SeaWorld, the Atlantis Water Adventure and more.  At the entrance is this mermaid fountain.

This mermaid was installed in 2013 as part of artificial reefs being built to replace natural coral reefs destroyed in the 1980s by the fishing industry.  Is is below the surface in Jemeluk Bay, near Amed Beach on Bali.

Mermaids in Miama at Villa Vizcaya

June 26, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

I took a drive down to Miami to see Villa Vizcaya and the mermaid sculptures there.

It is a pretty amazing place. Created in 1916 by agricultural industrialist James Deering, it was designed and built to look like a 400-year old Italian villa. The villa – a mansion really – is gorgeous, and the gardens are immaculate and beautiful.

The property is built right next to the water, and while it is somewhat protected against the direct impact of weather and waves from the Atlantic, it is still directly on the coast and fairly exposed. To protect the property and the gardens, a breakwater was created about 50′ out from the water’s edge, in the shape of a stone barge, with sculptures carved into the bow and stern and on the deck above. This includes 4 mermaids, 3 of which also have wings, which possibly makes them “mermaid angels”.

Thessalonike of Macedon

June 12, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

According to Greek legend the half-sister of Alexander the Great, Thessalonike, turned into a mermaid when she tried ending her life by jumping into the sea.   A white marble mermaid statue on the Greek island of Thasos commemorates this legend.

The legend involves Alexander finding the Fountain of Youth and making his sister immortal with its water. When Alexander later dies at the young age of 32, Thessalonike tries ending her own life by drowning. However, since she is immortal, she can’t die and is instead transformed into a mermaid. She has since inhabited the Aegean Sea, and when meeting a ship will ask whether Alexander still lives. If she is not assured by the crew that Alexander still lives and rules, she causes a storm to sink the ship and crew.
