Sirena Porto Cristo

Passeig de la Sirena is a tree-lined promenade next to the marina in Porto Cristo on the mediterranian island of Mallorca in Spain. In the center of the promenade is a fountain with a mermaid named Sirena Porto Cristo.

She is unusual – as far as mermaid statues go – in that she has both feet and flippers.

Mermaids in Spain’s Santa Clotilde Gardens

The Gardens of Santa Clotilde lie just outside the town of Lloret de Mar on the northeast Coast of Spain, halfway between Barcelona and France.

It’s a stunningly beautiful part of the coast, and the gardens and its sculptures are famous for their beauty, for the spectacular views, and for the Staircase of Mermaids with 5 mermaids riding giant turtles.

La Sirenita de Cangas

The Monumento “Galeón” was created by Manuel Franco Coia in granite and bronze, and was unveiled on May 1st, 2001 in the Ría de Vigo estuary on the shore of Cangas. The granite portion forms the base of the sculpture in the shape of a sinking ship with a female figurehead integrated into the shape of the prow, and a mermaid above.

Mermaids in the Gardens of Versailles

The Gardens of Versailles were created in the mid-to-late 1600s and contain hundreds of sculptures and 50 fountains. Right next to the Palace of Versailles itself is a small section of the gardens called Parterre du Nord, which includes two circular pools with Tritons and Nereids (mermaids), and another pool with the baroque Pyramid Fountain.

The Gardens of Versailles – and indeed the Palace of Versailles and most of the entire estate – miraculously survived the French Revolution with only minor damage, and has been restored, maintained and preserved since the 1830s.

Sirena of Salado

The legend of Sirena, a native American Indian mermaid, is beautifully expressed in Troy Kelley‘s life-size bronze mermaid statue in Salado, Texas.

According to local legend, a beautiful Indian maiden named Sirena wished to marry an Indian brave who didn’t return her feelings.  Sitting by the river looking at her reflections, she expressed her wish.   A magical catfish overheard her, and promised to help her win the warrior if she would agree to become a mermaid on each full moon for a year, swimming with the catfish in the river.  However, while in the shape of a mermaid during each full moon that year, if human eyes ever saw her in the moonlight, she would then have to remain a mermaid forever (which the catfish secretly hoped would happen)……

Užupis Mermaid, Lithuania

The Užupis Mermaid was created by sculptor Romas Vilčiauskas in 2002 and sits in an alcove below a bridge across the Vilnia River. It is a symbol of Užupis.

Užupis means “place beyond the river”, and is the name of a section of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.

Užupis bohemic and laissez-faire atmosphere similar to Montmartre in Paris and Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen.

Klaipeda’s Undinė Mermaid

The Lithuanian Maritime Academy gave this mermaid statue as a gift to the city of Klaipeda on January 15th 2015. It is located right on the edge of the Akmena-Danė River as it flows through the city and under a bridge.

It was created in bronze by Klaudijus Pūdymas.

Parthenope of Napoli

The Fontana della Sirena is Napoli (Naples), Italy, is a statue of Parthenope. She was a mermaid in Greek mythology, who cast herself into the sea after failing to lure Odysseus off his ship with her song.

Napoli was originally named after Parthenope, until it was renamed Napoli (New City).

A legend has it that a centaur named Vesuvius was in love with Parthenope, but that Zeus was jealous and turned Vesuvius into a volcano and Parthenope into the city of Napoli.

Penelope of Senigallia

The small city of Senigallia on the north-east coast of Italy has its own ‘little mermaid’ statue.   She is found at the end of the pier at Porto di Levante, Senigallia’s harbor.

The statue is known as Penelope of Senigallia, but is also popularly referred to as ‘The Little Mermaid of Senigallia’ and is often compared to Copenhagen’s famous mermaid statue by Edvard Eriksen.

Diana Fountain in Syracuse, Italy

The Fountain of Diana (Fontana di Diana) is found in the Archimedes Plaza (Piazza Archimede) in Syracuse (Siracusa) on the east coast of Sicily.

Diana is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals and wilderness, childbirth and virginity, and was often shown carrying a bow and arrow. She was the daughter of Zeus and twin sister of Apollo, the god of music, truth and prophecy.

The fountain includes a triton and a mermaid with a child on her lap riding sea monsters.
