Forest Lawn is the final resting place of hundreds of celebrities – Errol Flynn, Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, Spencer Tracy, just to name a few. It is an exquisitely beautiful location with a museum and a very impressive collection of fine art. There are more than 1500 statues on the Forest Lawn grounds.

You will find more information and photos on the Forest Lawn Mermaid page.

The Fabulous Cayucos Mermaid

February 19, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

This fabulous mermaid statue appeared in Cayucos in about 2005. It is located in front of a realty office and near the Mermaid Rock Soap company. It became the inspiration for an annual Cayucos mermaid parade.

The sea-shell bracelets, the hair clearly suspended in water and the special folds around the eyes are special features it shares with two stunning mermaid sculptures in Ventura, further down the California coast. While the artist is not known, it is clear the same artist created all 3 mermaid sculptures.

See lots of photos and more information on the Cayucos Mermaid page.

The Mermaid from “Splash”

February 12, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

There is a mermaid fountain in the 1984 Disney movie “Splash”. Madison the mermaid (played by Daryl Hannah) gives this mermaid fountain to her human lover Allen (Tom Hanks), and actually gets it installed inside his apartment.

The fountain was on display at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for many years, up through 2015 at least.

The fountain was created in fiberglass by the Walt Disney Studios Scenic Shop using molds originally created for the movie Herbie Goes Bananas.

If you happen to know where the mermaid fountain is now, please let us know.

I’ll post updates and additional photos on the Splash mermaid page.

February 5, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

There is a mermaid named Lorelie in the town of Unity in Maine. It was created by Maine wildlife sculptor Forest Hart and presented as a gift to Bert and Coral Clifford. The Cliffords in turn donated it to the Unity College Center for Performing Arts.

Heinrich Heine’s Lorelei Mermaid Fountain

January 29, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

The Lorelei Fountain contains 3 mermaids, and is located in Joyce Kilmer Park’s Grand Concourse in The Bronx. It was created in the 1890s by the German sculptor Ernst Herter.

The sculpture is a memorial to German poet and writer Heinrich Heine, and the sculpture is also known as the Heinrich Heine Fountain.

Heinrich composed the poem ‘Die Lorelei’, which immortalized the romantic German legend of Lorelei, a maiden who was transformed into a siren after throwing herself into the river. Lorelei could be heard singing from a rock along the river, her alluring voice distracting sailors, resulting in their death.

This fountain is carved out of white marble, and depicts Lorelei seated on a rock in the Rhine River among mermaids, dolphins, and seashells.

It was commissioned originally for the German city of Düsseldorf, but when the city declined the sculpture it was brought to New York in 1899.

The sculpture was controversial from the beginning – both in Germany and in New York – fueled both by the nudity and by anti-semitism (Heine was born Jewish). It has been vandalized and restored a number of times, with the latest restoration in 1999 also placing it here in the Joyce Kilmer Park, three blocks from its original location.

You can find all the details and many more photos on our Heinrich Heine Fountain page.

The Rockefeller Fountain in the Bronx

January 22, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

The “Rockefeller Fountain” is also known as the “Italian Fountain” and as the “Rainey Gate Fountain”, and includes a number of mermaids, mermen and sea-horses.

But regardless of the name, it is now located in the Bronx Zoo in New York City, just inside the Zoo entrance at Rainey Gate.

The fountain was carved from limestone and granite by sculptor Biagio Catella in Como (Italy) in 1872. It was initially installed in Piazza Cavour in Como.

William Rockefeller bought the fountain in 1902, brought it to New York, and donated it to the Bronx Zoo, where it was installed in 1910.  It was fully restored in 2008.

Pearl of the Conchos in San Angelo

January 15, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

Jayne Charless Beck was a San Angelo resident artist, who passed away in 1993.  In 1994 this bronze casting was donated by friends of Jayne Beck to the City of San Angelo.

It is an enlargement of a sculpture Jayne created earlier, and this enlarged sculpture was placed next to a pedestrian bridge close to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art.

In this area, a freshwater mussel species produces lustrous pearls in many colors, famous since the time of the Spanish conquistadors.

Mermaid Armonía in Mexico City

January 8, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

Edith Berlin, an accomplished sculptor from Veracruz, created the mermaid sculpture Armonía (Harmony) in 1994.

It was originally located at the intersection of Calle Genova and Calle Liverpool in the heart of Mexico City. The sculpture seems to have been moved after 2015 or so.

The location is a pedestrian street with a lot of shops, trees and shrubs, and an atmosphere of relaxed culture.

The two knobs just above the mermaid’s breasts suggest that something may be missing. There may have been another item that was attached to the sculpture originally. Or maybe another item was planned.

I have not been able to find any information on what that was or what the knobs are for.

You can see a number of additional photos and information on the page for The Mermaid Armonía.

Mermaid at Sinfonia del Mar in Acapulco

January 1, 2022 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

On the Pacific side of Acapulco where the hills and mountains meet the sea, a road follows the shore past Sinfonia del Mar – literally Symphony of the Sea.

It is an amphitheater built into – or carved out of – a mountain promontory, affording a fabulous view of the Pacific as it meets the mountains of Acapulco.  Near the top of the amphitheater is a mermaid statue and a dolphin.

You will find the mermaid statue “Sirena de Boca” in a small alcove by Boulevard Manuel Ávila Camacho next to the Gulf of Mexico in Boca del Río, Veracruz.  The Isla de Sacrificios (Island of Sacrifices) is about a mile off-shore.

Sculptor Ricardo Ponzanelli created the mermaid statue in bronze and named it “Sirena de Boca”. He placed it here in November of 2007.

The inscription by the City Council  quotes part of a poem by Cuban poet Julián del Casal entitled “El Poeta y la Sirena” (The Poet and the Mermaid).
