Puerto Vallarta’s Triton & Nereida Sculpture

December 18, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

In Greek mythology Triton is the son of Poseidon, and the Nereids are the daughters of Nereus and Doris.  Italian artist Carlos Esprino sculpted “Triton and Nereida” in 1987 as merman and mermaid lovers reaching for each other.

The sculpture is located prominently on Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, the city’s beautiful coastal promenade, which features many sculptures and much art, and a lot shops.

I’ve created this page with many more photos and information about this sculpture.

La Reina de los Mares (Queen of the Seas) is one of several mermaid statues on the Paseo Claussen promenade in Mazatlán, on the west coast of Mexico.

The little boy next to the mermaid appears to be Cupid, with a quiver of arrows carried on his back.

The sculpture was created possibly as early as 1980 but more likely in 1993 by Pedro Jimenez Corona.

Little French Key Mermaid in Honduras

November 13, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

On the tiny island of Little French Key in Honduras my good friend Steve Simonson spotted this mermaid with dolphins and was kind enough to take photos. It turns out that this is a replica of the sculpture in La Paz, Mexico, by José Kuri Breña.

Part of the Bay Islands chain, Little French Key is a privately owned island resort offering many excursions and activities in a paradise setting. The island prides itself on being eco-friendly and carbon-neutral, and very involved in rescuing animals in distress – all in addition to providing a fabulous vacation setting.

The Little Mermaid in Brazilia

November 6, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

The Department of the Navy in Brazil have a replica of Copenhagen’s statue of The Little Mermaid.  An investigation as to how and when it got there was done by Eric Royer Stoner, and it seems it was donated to Brazil in 1960, and was placed just outside the Brazilian Navy Headquarters building.

The mermaid statue appears to be a faithful replica of the original, donated in appreciation of the courtesy of the Brazilian Navy when visiting The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.

Belém’s Mermaid Fountain

October 30, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

There are 4 mermaid statues on the Chafariz das Sereias (Mermaid Fountain) in Praça da Sereia (Mermaid Plaza), in the city of Belém, Brazil, at the mouth of the Amazon river.

Each mermaid statue holds a cornucopia-like horn, which used to spout water when the fountain was installed around 1904.  The upper level has four herons.

The fountain is considered a monument to the Belle Époque in Belém, but has fallen into disrepair and neglect in recent years and there is no longer any water flowing.

Fuente de las Nereidas in Buenos Aires

October 23, 2021 By Mermaids of Earth Leave a Comment

La Fuente Monumental Las Nereidas (Fountain of Mermaids) was created in 1903 by Argentine sculptor Dolores Mora de Hernández (also known as Lola Mora) in white Carrara marble, representing nereids attending the birth of Venus.

Lola was a pioneer in many fields, including that of being a female sculptor, holding patents related to mining, breaking with gender stereotypes, promoting equal opportunities and women’s rights.

The fountain caused an uproar because of the nudes, and especially that a woman had created them, but despite the controversy Lola and the quality of her art overcame the prejudice and won over the hearts of the Argentine people.

There is a delightful little island called Isla del Pirata just off the coast of Cartagena in Columbia. And just off the shore of this Pirates Island sits – very appropriately – a mermaid.
