La Sirenita de Cangas

The Monumento “Galeón” was created by Manuel Franco Coia in granite and bronze, and was unveiled on May 1st, 2001 in the Ría de Vigo estuary on the shore of Cangas. The granite portion forms the base of the sculpture in the shape of a sinking ship with a female figurehead integrated into the shape of the prow.  map

At the sides of the ship’s prow are two dolphins, and atop the prow and figurehead is a bronze mermaid. The entire sculpture is about 19 ft tall.

The high tides here result in the sculpture at times being entirely above the waterline, and at other times having water up to the level of the dolphins’ tails.
