The mermaid statue "Sirena de Boca" can be found in a small alcove by Boulevard Manuel Ávila Camacho next to the Gulf of Mexico in Boca del Río, Veracruz. About a mile off-shore is the Isla de Sacrificios (Island of Sacrifices). map
Sirena De Boca
The bronze mermaid statue was created by sculptor Ricardo Ponzanelli, was named "Sirena de Boca" and was placed here in November of 2007. The inscription by the City Council quotes part of a poem by Cuban poet Julián del Casal entitled "El Poeta y la Sirena" (The Poet and the Mermaid):
Surge de entre las ondas azuladas
Una deidad risueña y misteriosa,
De frescos labios de color de rosa
Y un seno de marfil, encantador.
Su lúcido cabello de azabache
Rueda sobre sus hombros de alabastro,
Tienen sus ojos el fulgor de un astro
Y el fuego centelleante del amor.
Emerging from the blue waves
A cheerful and mysterious deity,
With fresh pink lips
And an enchanting ivory breast.
Her splendid raven hair
Locks on her alabaster shoulders
Her eyes have the glow of a star
And the flashing fire of love.
