The Mermaid of Porto Bello in Limassol on Cyprus was created by Greek sculptor Philip Yiapanis in 2014, and is 19 ft tall. Located on top of the Porto Bello Business & Cultural Centre, she overlooks the Limassol harbor on the south coast of Cyprus, welcoming seafarers to the port. map
This sculpture represents - like the statue on Thasos - Thessalonike, the sister of Alexander the Great. There is a local legend about her, which has it that Thessalonike gives up her human existence and becomes a mermaid to find the Fountain of Youth, so as to give her brother eternal life. She finds the Fountain of Youth at long last on Cyprus, in the harbor of Limassol. She remains there - presumably because Alexander meanwhile died young at the age of 32.
