This mermaid was installed in 2013 as part of artificial reefs being built to replace natural coral reefs destroyed in the 1980s by the fishing industry. Is is below the surface in Jemeluk Bay, near Amed Beach on Bali. map
Celia Gregory of The Marine Foundation planned and commissioned the sculpture in coordination with Reef Check Indonesia. The artist was Wayan Winten, and the funds for the project were provided by The Body Shop, a local business. The sculpture is designed to promote and support marine life, especially corals and fish.
